Why subsea sourcing is different

The component cost is almost never the number that matters. A vessel day, an ROV spread and a weather window dwarf the price of the part, so the intervention cost sets the tolerance for getting it wrong. A connector that is nearly right is worth nothing.

• Depth and pressure rating — rated working depth, test pressure and whether the item is pressure-balanced, oil-filled or one-atmosphere.
• Materials and corrosion — super duplex, titanium, and elastomer compatibility with the fluids present. Galvanic pairing is where retrofits usually come unstuck.
• Mating and interchangeability — connector series, gender, keyway, pin count and contact arrangement, plus whether the mate is wet-mateable or dry-mate only.
• Qualification evidence — the test and qualification records behind the rating, not just a datasheet line.
• Traceability — batch and serial records, because subsea failures get investigated properly.
